Fougeres and the Fort
The heir to a thousand years of history, the château de Fougères still stands on its rocky islet. It was however originally only a wooden fort, destroyed in 1166 by Henri II Plantagenet. A new stone castle was then built by Raoul II which set the layout of the current château.
The evolution military techniques reinforced its architecture over 4 centuries : to its battlements, machinations and moats were added the large Melusine and Gobelins towers in 13 th century.
The twin towers named Raoul and Surienne, whose walls are seven metres thick at their base, they are two of the most magnificent late Middle Ages artillery towers built. The château as it stands today is one of the largest medieval fortress in Europe.

Its earliest construction began at the end of the 10th century, however after enduring many attacks, the castle has been rebuilt many times. Today, it most resembles how it appeared during the 15th century. A close-up view from outside the castle can be found on the nearby ruined rampart walls.
The castle's strong fortifications were built to defend the border of Brittany (Bretagne) and are evident just by taking a walk on the discovery trail. The Nançon River acts as a moat around the castle.The thirteen towers that sprout up from the stone walls were not all constructed at the same time, appearing as a hodge podge of designs across an architectural timeline.
